South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust

Medical Services have been providing a Pension Support Service to our Trust since March 2014. We worked closely with the Team at the implementation phase to make sure that we brought the service, and particularly the web-site, to the attention of all our staff, many of whom who are based in community sites across Warwickshire.  We meet regularly with our Pension Adviser to monitor take up of the service and feedback any comments or issues from our staff.  As well as the regular pension surgeries, which are very popular with staff, the service has recently expanded to include pre-retirement seminars and education sessions for my HR Team.  We value our staff and see the PSS as a key element of the range of additional benefits we offer in recognition of this.

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust

I first met The Circle Medical Services Team at an event hosted by NHS Elect. At the time a number of our staff were challenged by understanding even the basics of the NHS Pension Scheme let alone the tax rules relating the annual and lifetime allowances. The Trust was keen to put in place a pensions advisory service for all staff as whilst we promote the value of joining the NHS Pension Scheme advice about what the scheme offers to individuals was extremely limited.

Since awarding the contract through competitive tender our staff have benefited immensely from the ‘individual’ clinics that are now on offer as well as the regular pension and retirement planning seminars. Staff have commented that they now have a better understanding of the real value and benefit of the NHS Pension Scheme and this is very much down to the Pension Support Service.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Over recent years there have been a number of key changes to the NHS Pension which may impact staff and their retirement plans.  To support our staff with changes to the pension scheme we introduced the Pension Support Service (PSS) in March 2014.  The Pension Support Service has been well received by staff and the activity levels are such that show the service has supported our staff in understanding their pension and the impact on their retirement plans.  Staff have received support both through the portal and through briefings/seminars as well as one to one surgeries.  The PSS has supported a number of pension related matters including:

  • The provision of advice and support for our CAHMS staff that may be impacted by change with the move to the FTB service model
  • Supporting staff affected by in-year salary adjustments regarding their pension contribution.
  • Supporting the workforce to understand their Total Reward Statements  (TRS). Staff who take the time to review their TRS are able to identify any data quality issues related to information held with ESR or by the Pensions Agency and accessing this information may reduce request for pension statements
  • Dealing with queries relating to automatic re-enrolment of employees
  • Independent advice and support for staff to make informed decisions should they be considering entering into a salary sacrifice scheme.  This is even more critical as the 2015 scheme is a career average scheme

With the introduction of revalidation for nursing, staff who are nearing retirement may require support in relation to their plans.
